No More Cookies Allowed

Someone left a fortune cookie in our hospital room tonight. I woke Bryce up to crack it open with me. I should have let him sleep.

Bryce, Tammy and Dani: Fortune cookies have been here for only a couple of thousand years, the fortune of God's grace and love far longer than that. Seeing that love through your eyes and notes inspires many of us and reminds us not only of your love for each other, but of the many ways that God has inspired us to love each other...even those others who we have known only briefly (or never met). I've been inspired to love Bryce. I believe in miracles and in God's love for each of us; and I have three new names in my evening prayers.

My dear daughter,

How my heart aches for you. Dad and I both wish that we could carry this burden for you. None of us know God's plan for us but we endure trials the best we can. I remember when I had breast cancer a few years back. You might remember some of the sacred experiences that I was blessed to be the recipient of during that time. I truly felt--and still do--that in a way I was honored to have been chosen to experience that trial. I felt of Heavenly Father's love so much that I could not deny the fact that He knew what I was going through.

You have always been of a strong character. That strength will see you through. That and the faith that you have in God and the truthfulness of his gospel. You know of the plan of salvation and that through your faithfulness you and Bryce will one day be reunited. That is a glorious promise, one that we need to never lose sight of. You,Bryce and Danika are indeed an eternal family!!!

Many, many people have been praying for you and Bryce. Heavenly Father has heard their prayers. I am certain that is what has been carrying you through this. You have seen miracles happen already--maybe not the miracle of prolonged life that we all wish Bryce could have, but so many other ones. God has chosen to call Bryce home. How blessed Bryce is to be able to return to Heavenly Father's presence, and how blessed you are to be married to such an elect individual. Take solace in that fact.

Tammy, we love you so much. We are here for you and Dani. Your sisters and brother are here for you. Bryce's parents and siblings are here for you. They all love you. We weep for you and Dani because we know that your lives will not be easy, and you will experience much loneliness and pain. We will all strive very hard to ease some of your burderns. Don't be afraid to cast your burdens upon the lord. He shall sustain you.

Please feel Dad's and my arms around you and feel of our love, and our sorrow. You are in God's arms, also. May you receive peace in the knowledge that we will someday all be together in eternity.

Love,

Mom S.

The weird thing about this fortune is that I was there when it was opened and read, and it wasn't left by someone on purpose. It was almost certainly left by a family member who must have been eating Chinese food in the room and left the cookie for whoever wanted it. Surely nobody knew what fortune was inside. That was why we were so awestruck by the extremely unusual fortune that we found, and wondering if it was somehow destined to be read by Bryce and Tammy. What does it mean???

Bryce and I love you all so much! What an honor it is to be a part of this family. You have all buoyed me before, and this trial has been a reminder that I am never alone. My awesome family...
I'm not superstitious about the cookie; it was just a random message that happened to be read at a sensitive moment. Holly, thank you for being there for that stupid moment. Steffi, thanks for tucking me in tonight. I got a lot of sleep--way more than in previous nights!

Bryce, Tammy, and Dani,

Not only do I HATE fortune cookies, but I don't think I want to each Chinese food ever again! Regardless of the source or reason that you stumbled upon this fortune, I, myself, stumbled across something today.

In contrast to the fortune, what I found was the something beautiful. It was a picture of you two from David's wedding. As I haven't seen either of you since then, this picture reminded me of the absolute admiration you have for eachother. Fondly, I remember having dinner by the bay with you two and listening to stories of the incredible hurdles that Bryce has overcome, in the past. Bryce, you are an inspiration!!!! Tammy, there are no words for you. You are nothing short of amazing.

As Dave has given me updates on the challenges you two have faced in the past few weeks, I have continued to pray...and cry, and pray. My friends, co-workers, and family (and pretty much everyone I know)are praying for you guys. All I know is...there is no other option than to fight. You are two of the most important people to my brother, Dave. For that reason and so many more, you are two of the most important to me. In that case, I will fight, too.

Sending you love, prayers, and strength.
